Gandma’s Apron brings back so many memories

  • When the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped her apron around her arms.
  • Grandma’s big apron wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot stove.
  • Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in Grandma’s  apron.
  • From the garden, Grandma carried all sorts of vegetables
  • After the peas had been shelled, Grandma’s  apron carried out the hulls.
  • In the fall, Grandma’s apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
  • When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture Grandma’s old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
  • When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, she waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
  • But most of all, any apron I see reminds me of Grandma, the wonderful kitchen smells, the hugs and her love.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes.

Why not add one of these fun cakes to your party?

Want to give the expectant mom some memories?

baby memories-web

This is one of my favorite cakes as it makes a memory for not only the new mommy and daddy, but grandma & pa, auntie and uncles, and both new friends & those who knew them as kids.

This cake was for a baby shower that mommy almost didn’t get to as baby was born later that night. The bottom tier has baby pictures of mommy with top tier daddy’s baby pictures. The top is quite different with the baby shoes holding up an ulta-sound picture which I framed for mommy and daddy.

Just think of your mom and dad celebrating 25 or 50 years with pictures on their cake of them getting married, hold and playing with their children, and pictures of them doing things they have enjoyed doing together over the years.

What about a “Old lordy, look who’s 40?” cake having pictures of him as a kid, doing ridiculous things with friends, getting married, etc?

What about Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Wedding Showers, Graduation or any occasion making memories with this cake?

Bullfrogs and Butterflies?

Judy enjoys a Prince Charming Frog Cake

Bullfrogs and Butterflies was the title of my grandson’s puppet team’s spring performances. It told a story of how when we become Christians, we need to change our lives just like a tadpole becomes a bullfrog and a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.

I surprised our Bullfrogs and Butterflies director by giving her her own frog. Judy could not believe that it was covered with frosting and took her finger poking it, then stated, “It is frosting.” She later told me she felt so bad when she cut the leg off to eat. It bothered her all day, but she kept eating it, boring thru the leg stump.

Making sculptured cakes gives me joy beyond what you can imagine. I love to take an idea someone has and run with it.

Does he want a dowry?

crystal garaden webA dowry – the money or property a bride brings to her husband at marriage – was common throughout much of the ancient world, and also flourished in medieval Europe.
In many places around the world, weddings were formal occasions, accompanied by much gift giving and ritual. The practice of dowries apparently originated when a bride’s parents gave her presents. As time went on, the dowry developed various functions. A dowry of household goods often helped the newly weds set up their own home. A dowry of property or jewelry would help the wife support herself if her husband died. Generally, the husband returned the dowry to his in-laws if he and his wife divorced or if his wife died childless.
Sometimes, the groom’s family paid for the bride, often to compensate her family for the money spent raising her. If the bride had been a valuable worker, her family was sometimes compensated for the loss of her economic support.
Romans, having complicated traditions governing marriages, had specific dowry laws. Traditional Chinese and Hindu engagements and weddings were also governed by specific rules and considerable ritual.

Christine and Katie are my baker assistants, delivery assistants, clean up crew, customer service reps and office staffers. Some day they may be small business owner themselves and this training is giving them lots of practice. Besides, I like having them around and what better excuse than to have them be my helpers.

YOUR RECEPTION JUST WOULDN’T BE THE SAME WITHOUT A WEDDING CAKE!

YOUR RECEPTION JUST WOULDN'T BE THE SAME WITHOUT A WEDDING CAKE!

The ancient Romans used to make a cake of barley or wheat and then break it over the bride’s head as a sign of fertility. The wheat from which it was made symbolized fertility and the guests eagerly picked up the crumbs as good luck charms. It also became customary to pile several small cakes to create one large tier. The bride and groom would then try to kiss over the tower of cakes without knocking it over. If they succeeded, it was a sign that their marriage would be long and prosperous. Later, a clever baker decided to amass all these small cakes together, covering them with frosting. Thus, the modern tied cake was born.

Tired of the Crisco mess when cooking?

Want a tip to make it less mess and easier clean up when using Crisco (solid)?

I use a cooking scale which has an ajustable beginning point for weighing ingredients. I put the bowl I am using on the scale, adjust it to zero and add the Crisco. No extra mess, less clean up. i.e. 2 cups Crisco= 1#.

The first time I use a new solid ingredient, I measure and weigh it for future use. To do that, I put the measuring cup on the scale, set scale on “zero”, measure ingredient, weight again. I keep a list of weights on the inside of my cupboard.

Keep checking back for more baking tips.
