Did the Pilgrams celebrate with Turkey?

What foods topped the table at the first harvest feast? Historians aren’t completely certain about the full bounty, but it’s safe to say the pilgrims weren’t gobbling up pumpkin pie or playing with their mashed potatoes. Following is a list of the foods that were available to the colonists at the time of the 1621 feast. However, the only two items that historians know for sure were on the menu are venison and wild fowl, which are mentioned in primary sources. The most detailed description of the “First Thanksgiving” comes from Edward Winslow from A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, in 1621:

“Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. At which time, among other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed upon our governor, and upon the captain, and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.”

Buying guide for Wedding & Special Occasion

Be comfortable with your baker.
Your baker and other vendors are people you will be dealing with for months to come.  Make sure you feel comfortable with them. You should feel that you can tell them anything you want done or not done without having to apologize.  We as vendors are there to serve you.  I appreciate it when a customer tells me what it is that they want or don’t want.  Hey, it may not be what I want, but again it is not my wedding or special occasion.  When you choose me as your baker, please tell me what you think, so I can make you happy.  I am in the happy business.

Buying guide for Wedding & Special Occasion Cakes

Bring your own pictures.
Do research before picking your baker. Find pictures on-line and bridal magazines and show them to bakers. If they don’t say, “That looks fun” or get excited, you know that is not your baker.  Many bakers stay with the style they are comfortable with.  Trying new and exciting things is what I like to do. I will be honest with you, letting you what I can and can not do.

Your pictures will also let you and I know where to start in designing your dream cake.  I love working on new and exciting cakes.  I would not be be where I am with my cakes if I had never stepped outside the box.

Buying guide for Wedding & Special Occasion Cakes

 Always taste before buying.
Never take someones word as to the taste of a cake. This is your wedding cake or special occasion cake and the cake should meet your standards, not only in looks but in taste. Ever see a picture on a menu or a dessert on display and say, “oh that looks good” and when you get it, yuk.  You don’t want that to happen at your wedding or birthday party.

We meet. You taste.  Bring as many people you want along.  The more the merrier.  Hey, we can have a cake tasting party, you bring the people and I will supply the cake and coffee.

You always get what you pay for.
There are many other decorators doing cakes for much less than me, but the ingredients, dedication and attention to detail all suffer. Many bakeries use frozen cakes and frostings out of a bucket. My frosting only has five ingredients: sugar, egg whites, unsalted butter, vanilla extract and whipping cream, and my cakes are never frozen.

What is a puzzle cake?

butterfly puzzle-e-mail

Having a puzzle cake at your party is not just having another dessert, but a dessert that can add more fun to your party. Each puzzle cake is made up of odd shaped pieces of cake, sometimes different flavors. Each guest grabs their choice and enjoys. Yes, Sandy, you can cut your piece.

These cakes were inspired by the sculptured cake cut off pieces.  I am one who does not like to toss out good stuff.  What do you do with the odd shaped cuts from a sculptured cake?  My friends make cake balls.  I take all the odd shapes, put them together in a neat shaped puzzle, frost and a puzzle cake is born.  So if I have several differend flavors of cake left over, then grab and you  get what you get.  Connect with me on Facebook and watch for me to do special offers on puzzle cakes when I do sculptured cakes.  On an added note, when you order your puzzle cake, I supply the handi wipes.
