A story of the origin of fairies appears in a chapter about Peter Pan in J. M. Barrie‘s 1902 novel The Little White Bird, and was incorporated into his later works about the character. Barrie wrote, “When the first baby laughed for the first time, his laugh broke into a million pieces, and they all went skipping about. That was the beginning of fairies.”

I just got a new fairy mold and of course had to try it out. I can imagine a lot of cakes with this one them.

Can’t wait to paint them.

As reported in a February, 1840 edition of The London Times, Queen Victoria’s wedding cake was more than nine feet in circumference. A second tier arose from this “plateau,” supported by two pedestals. On the second tier was a sculpture of the mythical heroine Britannia gazing upon the royal pair frozen at the moment of their exchanging vows. At their feet were two turtle doves (symbolizing purity and innocence) and a dog (representing faithful attachment). Completing the scene were various sculpted Cupids, one of them writing the date of the wedding with a stylus on a tablet.

The wedding cake, to be shared by the newlyweds and their guests, signifies the “breaking of the kinship.”

Please note that I do not play the game that many bakers play. When you ask them, “How much will this cake cost?”, other bakers quote you a price that sounds very reasonable. What they “forget” to mention is that price is just the cost of their servings of cake, and that everything else is “extra” such as delivery, set up, rental of plates, pillars, fountain, etc. By the time this is all tacked onto price of the cake, you wind up paying two or even three times the initial quote.

I think that’s outrageous, it may be a standard industry practice, but it is a practice I do not do. I have very few extra charges, which do not include set up, delivery in Livingston County, or rental of any of my equipment.

The word “cake” is used to describe anything from one or more layers, that are filled, unfilled, frosted, adorned or plain to pancakes. They are special and are often associated with life’s milestones i.e.birthdays, weddings, showers, engagements, or they can be enjoyed simply as a dessert or snack.

Technically, today’s cakes are a sweet foodstuff prepared by baking a flour-based dough or batter. The term cake also may refer to any round, flat disk of food, such as a pancake. They lend themselves to limitless variations depending on the flavorings added to the basic ingredients, the shapes of the pans used in baking, and fillings, icings and decorations used.

Webster says: Cake: a sweet food made from a baked mixture of flour, eggs, sugar and fat. But, to me a cake is a beautiful sweet celebration of life.

Can you imagine making a cake without an electric mixer?

In the pre-electric-mixer day mixing a cake involved a lot of whipping the cake by hand. We usually didn’t have a hand cranked mixer that worked well, so this involved a large mixing spoon to whip it. Some old timers even counted the number of times they whipped the mixture – sort of made it fun and you didn’t notice your arm tiring.

Decorating at Christmas Time

I have to admit that I have totally gotten the Christmas Spirit. All I want to do is play Christmas songs, sing Christmas carols and bake holiday treats.

This year I have chosen to put my decorations up slowly. I am not tired or cranky and I am enjoying Christmas so much more. First went up my nativity (as he is the reason for the season, right?), then the tree, then the mantel decorations, today will be outside lights and maybe windows lights, if I have time since my grandson is coming over to make candy and maybe some Christmas friendship tea. You see my 3 grandchildren come over, usually at different times, to help with the tree, windows, hanging cards, baking cookies, making fudge, making candy and of course, making Christmas cupcakes and cakes. I am so enjoying spending special time with them. Everyone should try it, spending special time with friends and family that is. I say, “who cares if I have the best looking decorated house, this season is for time with my family and friends”.
