There are a wide variety of shapes from which to choose, i.e. round, square, mini, oval and less common – hexagon and octagon.  The shape of your cake will in large part be influenced by the style that your choose.  Those who which to have a more traditional cake will probably go with a round, tiered cake while more modern couples would be better off with a square, hexagonal or octagonal cake.

The current rage in wedding cakes is something simple and elegant as those timeless elements will always look good-whether it is for today or for looking back in pictures twenty years from now.

As reported in a February, 1840 edition of The London Times, Queen Victoria’s wedding cake was more than nine feet in circumference. A second tier arose from this “plateau,” supported by two pedestals. On the second tier was a sculpture of the mythical heroine Britannia gazing upon the royal pair frozen at the moment of their exchanging vows. At their feet were two turtle doves (symbolizing purity and innocence) and a dog (representing faithful attachment). Completing the scene were various sculpted Cupids, one of them writing the date of the wedding with a stylus on a tablet.

Please note that I do not play the game that many bakers play. When you ask them, “How much will this cake cost?”, other bakers quote you a price that sounds very reasonable. What they “forget” to mention is that price is just the cost of their servings of cake, and that everything else is “extra” such as delivery, set up, rental of plates, pillars, fountain, etc. By the time this is all tacked onto price of the cake, you wind up paying two or even three times the initial quote.

I think that’s outrageous, it may be a standard industry practice, but it is a practice I do not do. I have very few extra charges, which do not include set up, delivery in Livingston County, or rental of any of my equipment.

The word “cake” is used to describe anything from one or more layers, that are filled, unfilled, frosted, adorned or plain to pancakes. They are special and are often associated with life’s milestones i.e.birthdays, weddings, showers, engagements, or they can be enjoyed simply as a dessert or snack.

Technically, today’s cakes are a sweet  foodstuff prepared by baking a  flour-based dough or batter. The term cake also may refer to any round, flat disk of food, such as a pancake. They lend themselves to limitless variations depending on the flavorings added to the basic ingredients, the shapes of the pans used in baking, and fillings, icings and decorations used. 

Webster says: Cake: a sweet food made from a baked mixture of flour, eggs, sugar and fat.  But, to me a cake is a beautiful sweet celebration of life.

Bridesmaids Luncheon

Let’s face it: Weddings go by in such a blur that after the dishes have cleared and the flowers begin to wilt, many brides realize they never really had a chance to spend some quality time with their nearest and dearest. That’s what makes bridesmaids’ luncheons so great: They afford the perfect opportunity to get together and enjoy some time with your closest girlfriends one last time before the main event. They’re entirely optional, but this fun and typically hassle-free soiree is definitely worth your while. So what does it entail? 

Think of the bridesmaids’ luncheon or tea like a reverse bridal shower in which you’re now the hostess. The etiquette surrounding the bridesmaids’ luncheon is pretty flexible, so feel free to adapt to suit your needs. The “luncheon” can be dinner, brunch, an afternoon of pampering at the nearby spa, or a group activity of some kind.

Obviously all of the bridesmaids and junior bridesmaids will be in attendance, along with your mom and your fiancé’s mom. Other attendees may include your close female relatives – sisters, cousins, aunts – as well as any flower girls. Regardless, it’s usually best to try to keep it intimate. This may be one of the few times during the whirlwind wedding weekend when you can relax and enjoy some close, quiet time with the special women in your life. Think of it as a bittersweet, fond farewell.

Unlike showers, bridesmaids’ luncheons aren’t typically centered around planned games and activities. The one constant is that you thank your bridesmaids, either formally in a prepared speech or toast, or one-on-one throughout the event. The luncheon is also a great time to present your bridesmaids’ gifts, along with any gifts to the moms and grandmothers in attendance.

1. Create a comparison chart to track what’s included in the price for each venue you’re considering. One company may not include linens and the cake, for example, while another company does.

 2. Many public spaces, like parks or the local village green, may be available to rent at a low fee. However, if the space is not equipped to handle events, you’ll have to rent everything from napkins to tables and chairs. Make sure you come out ahead!

3. Choose an unusual venue, such as an aquarium, a zoo, a gallery or an historical site. Site fees are not high and you’ll save on decor because the venue already supplies ambiance. But the same caveat goes as for public spaces: Figure in what you’ll have to spend on rentals. Wouldn’t a leppard or zibra make a great groom’s cake?
